Hardware VPN at main location, software VPN on the laptops to connect to main network, Terminal Services to access the database. Its not hard to set up and not all that costly.

Instead, when you’re away from home, you can connect to the VPN, and your computer will act like it’s part of the same local network as the computer at home, running the Remote Desktop server. If the issue sporadic.. then the ACL on the VPN server should be fine. If you have access to the backend RDP server, please check the value of the security layer under Windows registry settings. Open regedit using Run >> Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp.
